We are Building a Shade Shack for Plant Propagation

We are Building a Shade Shack for Plant Propagation
Building the Shade Shack for Dune Sunflower Propagation. The hedge on the fence on the right are native American Beauty Berry. The bananas "trees" have two banana stalks.

When we moved to the farm, I realized two things early on. First, everything is difficult. Second, every farm activity makes you dirty. Starting a Nursery is no less difficult or dirty!

The first batch of Dune Sunflowers we propagated had a survival rate of 30 out of 36 cuttings (not bad in my opinion). Our second batch of around 50 faired far worse. I think the culprit was intense sunshine despite our regular waterings.

To help, we are building a multi-purpose greenhouse or shade house depending on the time of year.

In the summer, the shade will provide an area to keep smaller cuttings and seeds shaded until properly rooted. During the winter, we can convert the shack to a greenhouse for keeping less cold tolerant plants.
